Here’s What It’s Like To Use A Journal Every Day For A Week

Have you ever said you were going to do something.. and actually stuck with it? How about for a whole week? I’ve always been the kind of person that says they’re totally, 100 percent going to stick to doing something new, but then only lasts about three days doing it. Whether it’s drinking more water, reading more books, or watching less Netflix (LOL never), I’ve never committed hard enough to stick it through a week. Which is why I’m going to be starting something new every week, and sticking to it day to day. I’m definitely going to be expecting some urges to give up but, I will not let you girls down! Hey, maybe whatever I’m doing will become a habit!

Forty years in the future, I’ve always wanted to pull out my dusty journals from my massive bookshelf and re-read my past day-to-days. This is the reason why I first bought my journal in fifth grade and have not looked back since. I used to be pretty good at writing in my journal every day up, until high school, where I have about four entries written for all four years. Writing in a journal is something that is so easy to do and only takes a few minutes, so this week I’m going to try to write in my journal every single day and a good amount of detail! Am I a writing feen or did my journal remain blank this week? Find out!

Day 1 (Monday):
Day one of journaling! Today, I didn’t do too much, mostly worked from home. Great, super exciting day to start journaling about! After I finished my work, I went on a run. I live in a small town, so during my run I saw an old friend from high school. I haven’t seen her since we graduated, so it was nice to catch up with her. Good, finally something worthy to put in my journal. Got home, I took a shower, ate lunch, and worked pretty much ’til dinner time. After dinner, I decided to journal, but it was then that I realized I have no idea where my journal was. Really, Cheyenne? I knew I was going to be doing this column this week, but literally had no idea where my journal was at all.

I looked and looked and looked for what seemed like an hour and could not find it. I looked under my bed, on my bed, in my closet, and my bookshelf, and finally I found it under this massive chair I have in my room. Finally, I was able to begin journaling. The last entry I had was from a month ago. Not too bad, but a lot has happened in the past month and I couldn’t really remember everything that was going on. Hard to start writing, because I didn’t really know where to start, but after a good 10 minutes of staring at the page, the words just started to flow. It felt nice and relaxing, and I was excited to do this again tomorrow.

Day 2 (Tuesday):
I went to Toyota because I had four recalls on my car that I’ve been neglecting to get checked out. Yes I know, I’m a terrible human. I just expected to drop my car off at Toyota, be there for about an hour or two, and be on my way. Unfortunately, this was not the case. They had to order the parts in from a different store, and the labor was going to take much longer than they expected. I was so happy I brought my Nook and my laptop, because I was stuck at Toyota for six hours! Six hours people. There was a Thai restaurant right next door so I had some Thai food and that was literally the highlight of my day. Finally, my car was finished, and I was good to go.

When I got home, it was about 8 PM, and the only thing left to do was eat dinner, exercise, and do some work. Nothing too exciting to journal about. It was so odd, because I was almost hoping for something to go wrong while I was cooking my dinner or while I was exercising, just so I could have something interesting to write about. Well, nothing went wrong and everything went totally normal. When I was journaling, I just wrote about my boring Monday game day. But that’s when I realized, when I’m older, it’s interesting to look back and read about the days where nothing much happened. Today was just a “simple slice of life” kind of day, I’m just happy I wrote in my journal!

Day 3 (Wednesday):
Well, today was definitely an easy day to journal because I got pulled over by a cop. Bah! It was actually a perfect storm as to why I got pulled over, too. I was grabbing my phone out of my purse and was putting my auxiliary cable into my phone to attach it to the handsfree device in my car. As soon as I was doing this, a policeman pulled up next to me, saw that my phone was on my lap but was being held in my hand, so he pulled me over. I was trying to explain to the officer that I was trying to make my phone hands-free, but it’s ironic because I needed to use my hands to make the phone hands-free. He even said that what I was saying makes perfect sense, but it’s just bad luck that he caught me touching my phone. Great.

He then asked me for my driver’s license, so I reach for my purse, and discovered I forgot it. CHEYENNE, REALLY?! I then explained to the officer that I forgot my purse and he gave me some serious side-eye. Then, he asks me for my registration and proof of vehicle insurance. Well, great. My registration is due this month, so I instantly got a fix-it ticket. With my luck literally being so great, I reach for my insurance and pull out an expired insurance card. Drop the mic. I’m an idiot. By now, I was panicking in fear that he thought I was a crazed felon. Luckily, he said that I could show him receipt of my insurance payment on my phone and that would be able to take care of it. So, I ended up with a $150 cellphone ticket and a $10 fix-it ticket. Not one of my best days. I’m gonna journal away my anger now.

Day 4 (Thursday):
I was still upset about my ticket, so I decided to cheer myself up by going to a thrift store. There, I found this cute little number below! Only $8…what a steal! After I bought this magnificent dress, I prepared for my improv show. At this point in the day, I felt like I was going to have a much better day than yesterday. I booked it over to Hollywood to perform at Comedy Sportz. I’m not going to lie, our audiences aren’t usually too big. On a regular night, we’ll have about 15 people in the crowd, so it’s a pretty intimate show. I arrive at the theater an hour before the show, and see on our backstage whiteboard that we had 60 people coming tonight! Woah! And, even better, they were group from out of town, so they’ve never seen the show before. It’s always great being able to do a show to an audience that doesn’t know what to expect.

Well, the crowd comes in and it’s a bunch of high school improvisers seeing our show. Could this night get any better?! I love it when younger improvisers come watch the show because it’s an easy opportunity to learn from watching… And even point out our mistakes! Just kidding, I’m perfect. Just kidding about being just kidding. Anyway, the show begins and our team is doing really well. The audience is in hysterics and we even invite a few kids on stage to play with us. It was such a great night, and afterwards at bunch of kids came up to me and told me I was really funny. This was one of the first nights I was really excited to go home and journal about. I just felt really good about myself and was excited to share such a successful day to my journal!

Day 5 (Friday):
I’m just going to start this one out by saying I really didn’t have too much going on today, which is why I literally just took an adorable picture of my dog (below). Today I woke up and was still feeling great about last night’s improv performance. I snapped my cute pic of my pup, and decided to head over to my boyfriends house to see if he was as bored as I was. As soon as I arrived, his face screamed boredom and we decided to go for some lunch. We grabbed some cheap Mediterranean food, brought it back to his house, and went scrolling through Netflix. That’s when we realized we pretty much watched everything we wanted to watch on Netflix. If you ever have that sad realization, it’s a pretty awful feeling.

My boyfriend and I then realized that we have not seen the one show that everyone talks about. The one show that people either have left the finale or hated the finale. The one show that people talked about what seems like forever, and still do not stop talking about. That show is a show that I’m now addicted to, and unfortunately is taking over my life… Lost. Holy moly, that show is incredible. The next thing I know, my boyfriend and I watched eight episodes in a day. I was actually pretty annoyed at myself for this because I realized I didn’t really have much to journal about except for the plot of Lost. I’m not sure 50-year-old me would enjoy reading about that. Unfortunately, not much else happened that night except for more Lost, so I ended up journaling about the plot of Lost. I was desperate people.

Day 6 (Saturday):
I hung out with my BFF Kirsty today! What a good Saturday. Kirsty has been my friend since I was two years old. We pretty much grown up together and I love her dearly! Well, we were quite bored and we weren’t sure what to do today. She’s very good at doing hair and make up, so I asked her if she could transform me; she pleasantly obliged. She thought it would be super fun to make my hair look incredibly short. With her amazing talent, she was able to make my long hair look like a bob. Wow, I could barely even recognize myself in the photo I took. She then did my make up which paired perfectly with my cute fake bob.

We then decided to go out on the town, a.k.a. go to CVS and get some snacks. At CVS, I saw another person from my high school, and they thought I chopped off all my hair! This was super funny and I cracked up. Finally a good story 50-year-old me can laugh about in my journal. After I tracked everyone with my fake bob, I went home and decided to watch more Lost. Of, course. I wrote in my journal, and found it to be a very easy day to write about. I think there was a lot of stuff going on today, so it made it way easier to write.

Sunday (Day 7):
I was dreading today because I knew I wouldn’t have much going on, therefore I wouldn’t have much too write about. Well, I went to improv practice hoping something crazy would happened so I could have something to write about. I know, sad. I thought maybe there would be some crazy team drama or I would break my leg or something. Okay, maybe not that, but something else. Well, nothing really happened at improv practice, so I left for home. As soon as I got home, I went on a run. I was pretty exhausted after my run, but I checked how far I ran, and I ran 2.5 miles! That’s pretty crazy for me because I love laying on my couch watching Netflix.

I was really happy with myself and was super excited to share this with my journal. After I showered, my family went out to this new Chinese restaurant we’ve never been to before. The food was amazing, and I ate way too many potstickers completely and undoing the calories I burned from my run. As soon as I got home, I decided to journal about my day. I almost felt a little sad, because it felt like this was going to be the last day I would be sharing to my journal. I know that’s not the case, but something about today felt like a culmination of journaling. Well, I’m going to go watch Lost and go to sleep… Good night, journal.

Conclusion: This week I did something I’ve always wanted to do. Journaling is such a great way to relieve stress and to simply write down soon-to-be memories. I’m a very nostalgic person, so I was happy I journaled this week. I would absolutely love to do this every day and I’m going to try my hardest to do so. It’s very easy to sit down and journal when it’s summertime and there’s not too much going on. When school begins it’s a completely different story, but it went so well this week, I really want to continue onto my journaling path. Also, if I keep writing about the plots of Lost, I Will end up writing my own Lost: The Novel.
